Frank S. K. Appah Jr. MD PhD is a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in adolescent and adult psychiatry. He is the founder of Meroë Psychiatric, a Westport-based private practice providing psychiatric consultation, psychotherapy, pharmacogenetic testing, and medication management.
Dr. Appah earned his MD and PhD in molecular biology from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in 2009, followed by a residency in adult psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine. He served as co-chief resident during his residency and was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society for excellence in clinical care, compassion, and dedication to service. He also completed a public psychiatry fellowship with the Yale Department of Psychiatry.
Dr. Appah served as the Unit Chief for the Psychiatric Inpatient Unit at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he specialized in the care of individuals with mood, anxiety, personality, psychotic, and substance use disorders. In September of 2018, Dr. Appah received St.Vincent’s Medical Center’s St. Vincent De Paul Award as “Physician of the Year.”
Dr. Appah combines conventional psychiatry with nutritional therapies to achieve optimal brain health for his clients. His services include genetic testing to optimize psychotropic therapy and and laboratory studies to address metabolic issues and micronutrient deficiencies. Dr. Appah also collaborates with clinical nutritionists to incorporate dietary interventions into the treatment plan of his clients. In addition to direct patient care, Dr. Appah is an instructor with the Yale School of Medicine.
Dr. Appah has a special interest in psychedelic-assisted therapy and is a MAPS MDMA Therapy Training Program trainee. Meroë Psychiatric is also a certified esketamine treatment center.
